How to prepare a private-label pet care manufacturing brief
A practical guide for brand owners: define your pet care range, formula direction, pack format and quantities before requesting a manufacturing quote.

Start with the business requirement
A useful manufacturing brief begins with the product you want to sell and the customer you intend to serve. A salon shampoo, an everyday retail wash and a compact travel product can require different packs, dispensing systems and application instructions. Define the channel and the intended use before choosing a bottle or fragrance.
List the species and age range you want the product developed for. Avoid assuming that one formula can be labelled for every pet. Put species suitability and the intended application area on the review list for the formulation team.
Choose a focused starting range
Create a shortlist with a clear role for each product. A shampoo, a complementary conditioner and a finishing spray can form a coordinated grooming line. Paw care and waterless products can be considered separately when they serve your channel.
For each shortlisted item, note the format, preferred pack capacity and order quantity. If you are considering multiple sizes, provide a separate quantity for each. This makes the quotation easier to compare and avoids treating one total quantity as a commitment across every variant.
Separate preferences from specifications
A colour code, fragrance reference or ingredient idea communicates a direction. It does not establish an approved formula. Explain what matters most: appearance, scent intensity, dispensing, rinse behaviour or label positioning. Include references where available and identify which choices are flexible.
Ask what samples and product documentation will be available for review. Record how formula approval, packaging approval and artwork approval will be confirmed so that the agreed brief remains clear when revisions occur.
Make the quote request complete
Include your brand name, contact details, delivery location and preferred launch window. Request confirmation of MOQ, lead time, packaging costs, taxes and freight rather than assuming these are included. A launch date is a planning target until the production schedule is agreed.
Use the catalogue to save product preferences into one enquiry. Add unresolved questions to the brief so the manufacturing conversation can address them together.
